Chapter Twelve

Ernie, Spats, and I went into the hall. There was a lull in the music, so we talked in low voices.

Ernie leaned against the wall. “What do you think?”

I turned to Spats. His lips were a thin line, his eyes hard.

“Well,” Spats said slowly. “My guess is something’s not right.” He looked at me. “And by the way you were reacting when Ernie interviewed Miles, you think the same thing.”

I nodded. “The whole conversation was déjà vu, like I was talking to Breanna Talbot. Miles’s demeanor didn’t seem right to me, either.” I put a finger to my lips and thought. “There’s obviously a lot there between Miles and his brother, but there was something about his smugness. Miles seemed a little too casual about the whole thing.”

“Some killers are like that,” Spats said.

“Yes, but something else,” I replied.

Ernie stood with his hands in his pockets. “The whole time I was questioning him, I kept thinking something didn’t feel right.” He shrugged. “Maybe Miles poisoned Lisa, but he’s holding something back. We gotta give this sucker a good look.”

“How fast would cyanide work?” Spats asked.

“I talked about that with Jamison,” I said. “It depends on how much Lisa ingested, but it’s possible someone put enough in her food to kill her within an hour or two.”

“And the food masks the taste?” Spats ventured a guess.

“Yes,” I replied.

“Cyanide,” Ernie said. “I’ll bet she felt horrible.”

I thought about the look of pain on Lisa’s face when she was lying on the bed but then quickly dismissed it. “What have the other guests said about Miles?” I asked.

Spats glanced at his notes. “Not a whole lot, but the focus wasn’t on him. I did have a couple of the catering staff say that Miles has attended all the past galas, so that confirms what he said. But they didn’t say much about his behavior, either in the past or tonight.”

I gestured to encompass both of them. “Well, from here on out, ask whoever you’re interviewing specifically about Miles and his relationship with Niles.” I frowned at Ernie. “And yes, we’ll have to circle back with everyone we’ve already interviewed, but let’s focus on the guests we have left for now.”

Ernie nodded. “There are some guests still here that I believe are close to Niles, so I’ll make it a priority to talk to them.”

The music started up again, and I leaned forward. “I’ll head out to the command center again to see what the techs can find on Miles. I’m curious if there’s anything fishy in his background. I want to know what he was alluding to when he said that he took a sabbatical in college. There was something there.” Both Ernie and Spats nodded.

“Oh, yeah,” Spats said. “Miles didn’t want to get into that, and that makes me wonder what he’s hiding.”

“Anything else with the wait staff?” I asked them.

Ernie shook his head. “Same thing. Nobody’s seen anything. They all say that they were super busy, that there were a
